About
I am a post-doctoral researcher at Goethe-University in Frankfurt in the Early History sub-department in Archaeological Sciences. I am an osteoarchaeologist -- meaning typical physical anthropology/osteology of human remains in conjunction with their archaeological merit (funerary archaeology). My project is to contextualize the (c.9th century) population being recovered from Bíňa, Slovakia, through a comprehensive osteological and contextual analysis of the remains and those of contemporary nearby sites.
I also teach various relevant courses, including an introduction to anthropology in archaeology, basic osteology, and probably biological anthropology and funerary archaeology. I will also be co-directing future field schools at Bíňa. I intend to adjust them to focus on excavation of the graves and cleaning and inventory of the remains in the field.
In addition I have strong interests in Greek archaeology and religion (my first love), general osteoarchaeology, and particularly dental anthropology. I am fascinated by intentional human modification and treatment of the dead. I prefer "traditional" osteological methods (gross observation, morphology and metrics) and am always keen to combine osteology/physical anthropology with archaeological context and theory.
